Playa dust is not normal dust.
Black Rock Desert is an ancient lakebed. What blows off it is fine alkaline silt, closer to talc than dirt, and it gets past every seal on your controller: under the jog wheels, into the fader tracks, between the pad membranes, onto the main board.
Because it is alkaline, it does not just sit there. It pulls moisture from the air and slowly corrodes contacts and traces. That crunchy crossfader and the pad that needs two hits are the early symptoms. A wipe-down on the outside changes nothing inside.
